If you fancy sightseeing, there are many places of deep history. Olynthos Ancient Site and its archaeological museum, the ancient city of Stageira where the great philosopher Aristotle was born, Saint Paul’s tower in Nea Fokaia, Petralona cave with the two pre-human skeletons dated about 700,000 years, Poteidaia’s Canal and Porto Koufo’s harbor which was used by German submarines are some places amongst others.
Chalkidiki’s easternmost peninsula, is the only place worldwide ruled by black-robed monks, famous for the medieval monasteries. Unfortunately access is restricted to women. It is the center of the Christian Orthodox religion and is commonly referred to as the “Holy Mountain”. Today over 2,000 monks live an ascetic life in the 20 Orthodox monasteries. Mount Athos is approached by ferry from Ouranoupolis or Ierissos.
